The Character of Piggy

Piggy is a character I admire. Agree or disagree?

  1. maybe admire is too strong word because i do think that Piggy is intelligent, and he is given a hard time because of his looks - i think his character is too weak for me to admire him, though i do sympathise with him - especially the treatment he is given by Jack calling him 'fatty', assaulting him and putting him down.

  2. I agree that the word admire is too strong, but i do think that he is a very logical thinker and without him life for the boys on the island would be very different. In spite of this, I find Piggy extremely annoying ("I got the conch! I got the conch!") grr

  3. I also agree, I would not say I admire Piggy at all. I find Piggy amusing, worthy of pity and in some cases quite pathetic. Yes, he does have a few good ideas but lacks the ability to put them into action. If he could have presented his ideas in a less nagging way than perhaps he would have gained more respect from the boys, and things may have turned out much better for him...

  4. Piggy makes it very difficult for people to admire him. I guess this may be why Piggy had such a hard time on the island, although I do appreciate that Piggy does play an important role in keeping the island civilised...it was his idea that the conch was used as a symbol that allowed the boys to speak. And when Piggy was killed, and the conch was crushed it was as if the civilised behaviour among the boys was also killed. I can only admire Piggy for sustaining good behaviour, but I can't understand why Piggy was so intent on making sure all the boys were acting appropriately and then he is lazy and does not help do anything, even for his only friend Ralph. Is laziness acceptable in a civilised society?

  5. After reading the book fully, I feel I spoke too harshly towards Piggy. Perhaps it was his death that changed my mind, or his change in leadership once Jack was gone. Hes not the ideal person, but he didnt deserve a horrific death! Poor Piggy...:(

  6. Piggy is someone that you would be able to get along with and the way he gets bullied makes me admire him because he seems to be able to handle it. but its also makes me sad becasuse when he died and the conch got smashed the civilisation between the boys died aswell.

  7. OMG piggy is just the lil fat kid that gets picked on by some fag that thinks he's the shiz..i mean yeah piggy can be REAL naggy and annoying some (maybe most) the time but doesn't give Jack any right to be a bully about him - if piggy didn't die on the island he probably woud have commited suicide from the incredible amount of ridicle causing depression - no-one deserves that. And no-one cared about the fact that piggy NEEDED (except for Ralph) the glasses to see they only cared about making fire. I admire him for being able to take the bullying like someone said earlier but gosh shhh man stop being so winey haha.

  8. I do admire Piggy but at the same time I don't, even though he does play a part in keeping everyone civilized. Piggy is admired though because he managed to keep a straight head when he was surrounded by madness and he stayed true to his values and morals. I also think Piggy needs to be more assertive therefore he could gain the others respect.

  9. Wonderful debate girls! Wow Britt! Didn't realise you were so passionate - great stuff!
Guccilily, I particularly admire your reflective comments about a change in perception by the close of the novel, about Piggy. In particular, your recognition of the change in relationship between him and Ralph. Well done.

  10. i dont admire him exactly but i do find him an important character and he had really good ideas for them all if only they would listen to him but he never got a chance to speak well sometimes but even then he was ridiculed and told to shut up the way he died i find was really unfair and he didnt deserve to die that way not him not even anyone else its unfair and un human to have that done to you.
